Aaron King Named Director of Planning and Development Services
The City-County Planning Board voted September 27,2018, to hire Aaron King as Director of Planning and Development Services for Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. King succeeds Paul Norby, who retired August 1.
King joined the City-County Planning Department in 2005 and has been the land use coordinator for the City-County Planning and Development Services Department since 2013. Prior to that he was the principal planner overseeing design and development review. Before joining the City-County planning staff he worked as a county planner for Franklin County, Va., from 2003 to 2005.
King, 39, is a native of Winston-Salem. He has a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from East Carolina University and a master’s in public administration from Appalachian State University. King lives in Winston-Salem with his wife Megan.
The Planning Division of the Planning and Development Services Department is a joint City-County agency serving Winston-Salem and unincorporated Forsyth County as well as the smaller municipalities of Bethania, Tobaccoville, Rural Hall. Our staff has expertise in land use planning, transportation planning, economic development, historic preservation, neighborhood revitalization, environmental protection, and other issues affecting the growth of our community. Staff provides the data, information and professional recommendations regarding land use issues and other planning policy questions to the Planning Board and elected boards to help them make informed recommendations and decisions.
The Planning Board was established by a special act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1948 to provide consolidated planning services to the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County. As such, it is the oldest consolidated city-county agency in North Carolina. The Board is served by Planning staff which also functions as an administrative department of City and County governments.
