Vegetation Management is charged with maintaining all landscapes, turf and trees on rights of way and in parks. We are composed of five sections: Grounds Maintenance, Landscape Maintenance, Urban Forestry, Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, and Administration.
Our Grounds Maintenance section is responsible for all mowing on rights of way and in parks. This section mows over 1000 acres of parks and rights of way biweekly, using 27 employees and a number of mowing contractors.
The Landscape Maintenance Section makes sure that all landscapes on rights of way and in parks are properly maintained and kept looking their best. With over 55 acres of landscaped area, the section’s 36 employees work hard to control weeds, prune shrubs and make sure all areas are mulched. In FY 04-05, Landscape Maintenance personnel planted 1,090 trees, 35,000 perennials, 65,000 annual flowers, 40,000 bulbs, and spread 15,000 cu.yd. of mulch (3,300 pickup loads!)
Urban Forestry is responsible for all maintenance on trees on any city property. This includes planting trees on rights of way and in parks, removal of hazardous trees, and cleanup of storm damage. The section’s 14 employees are responsible for over 100,000 trees!
Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful program is a nonprofit volunteer organization whose mission is litter education and prevention, beautification and environmental education. It is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.
