As in the past, city streets around the Southeast Gateway will be closed to motor vehicles so that cyclists, walkers, and skaters of all ages can enjoy themselves without worrying about traffic. Helmets are required for cyclists. The closed streets include Poplar, West, Marshall and part of Salem Avenue.

Participants can enjoy a variety of activities on the greenway: face painting, corn hole, hula hoops, jump ropes, parachute games, field games, and bike decorating. A special passport, available at the registration table, will be stamped for participation in each activity. Passports can be turned in when participants leave in exchange for a small prize.

Decorating a bikeAs an incentive, the Winston-Salem Forsyth County elementary school with the most students participating will receive $400 in PE equipment for their school.

This year’s Cycling Sunday route has changed to create a safer, easier route for participants, according to Matthew Burczyk, the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator. He added, “Some past participants will be relieved to know that the new 0.75-mile route is not as steep as last year’s route and so should be easier for beginning cyclists.”

A paved trail through the Southeast Gateway property connects the Cycling Sunday course with the Salem Creek Greenway where the Fun Day activities are located. The Fun Day activities were organized by the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. Safe Kids will be offering free helmet fittings with the Winston-Salem Bike Co-op assisting as well as checking out bikes and pumping up tires. Other organizations participating include AARF, Brenner Fit, Cancer Services, Be Healthy School Kids, TRU (Tobacco Reality Unfiltered), Gateway Environmental Initiative, and WS Greenways.

To the west, the greenway goes to Marketplace Mall while the greenway extends to Salem Lake on the east.” In the event of bad weather, call 336.703.3110 for information.
