Wonderful Wake Forest Students Strike Again!

The weather was hot Sunday, March 25, 2007, and so was the activity around an unnamed tributary off of Reynolda Road, where 65 hard-working WFU students who are members of the Leadership, Excellence, Application & Development program (LEAD) participated in their third annual stream clean up.  For some, this was a first time event and they were surprised by what they found.  For others, whose previous experience had prepared them, there wasn't as much surprise at finding a couple of mattresses, 27 shopping carts, a T.V., tires, toys of all sort and size, a sofa, several overstuffed chairs, fans, and lots and lots of other stuff that folks had dumped in the creek rather then to take to the landfill. 

While the majority of the students worked in the creek and the hillside above it, nine students placed informational door hanger throughout the neighborhood in an effort to inform folks about the importance of protecting our surface water.  In addition, they were able to meet some of the neighbors and pick up additional litter.

The students where able to make short work of it and managed to remove 5+ tons of "stuff" in a little over two hours! 

In additional to the annual March clean up, every August, incoming WFU Freshmen participate in a program of community service through SPARC (Students Promoting Action in the Community).  And last August, the SPARC students were joined by incoming law school students.  No wonder Stormwater staff think that Wake Forest students are the best!
