School Recycling Program

A comprehensive recycling program sponsored by the City/County Utility Commission is provided to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.  The program includes office paper, corrugated cardboard, and beverage container recycling.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System is one of the only ones in the State of North Carolina to have a comprehensive recycling program offered to all school campuses and other facilities. Currently every school in the system participates in the program as well as several maintenance and administrative buildings. This program was established in 2002 and has been funded by the Utility Commission since.

Through this program, schools can recycle cardboard, paper, and beverage containers. Eight-cubic-yard dumpsters are used to collect cardboard and paper while 96-gallon toter carts are used to collect the beverage containers. The collection service is contracted out to Waste Management, Inc.

It is estimated that approximately 2,000 tons of materials are collected each year through this program.
