Get ready for rollout recycling
(If you are part of the Pilot program, see below for schedule)
Come April 2, all curbside recycling in Winston-Salem will switch to BIWEEKLY rollout recycling with a 96-gallon blue rollout cart for all household recyclables.
In preparation for the switch, Recycle Today is distributing recycling carts in advance, starting the week of Jan. 9 and continuing through March. DO NOT use the cart until April 2! Continue to use your green carry-out bin through the end of March. (Roll-out carts require different collection trucks that will not enter service until April.) If you do not have a green bin, put your recycling in a bag (paper or plastic) until April.
Residents in those pilot neighborhoods with 64-gallon recycling carts will have their carts replaced with the larger 96-gallon carts.
When rollout recycling begins April 2, neighborhoods will be designated for “red week” or “blue week” collection. A brochure delivered to households with the carts will indicate their collection week, and have guidelines for using the cart.
In addition, citizens will be able to look up their collection week online on the Recycle Today web pages. Most households will have their recycling collected on the same day of the week as before. Some households will have to change collection days. These households will be notified in a separate mailing. See a preliminary collection map.
Rollout recycling offers these advantages:
- No sorting is required. Just put all your recyclables in the cart.
- The 96-gallon cart provides more than five times the capacity of the 18-gallon bin.
- Biweekly collection! You only have to put out your cart every other week.
- The cart consolidates the storage of your recyclables between pick-ups and protects them from the weather.
- Biweekly, automated collection reduced collection time, saving fuel and reducing emissions

Rollout Recycling Pilot Project
With the help of a $100,000 grant from the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the city has been testing rollout recycling in pilot neighborhoods for the past three years. It has proved to be very popular. Because it’s so easy to toss all recyclables into the cart, rollout carts increased recycling by an average of 30 percent in our pilot neighborhoods.
Guidelines for rollout recycling:
Put all recyclables in the cart – no sorting or separation needed!
The cart can only be used for recyclable materials. No garbage, trash, or yard waste.
All recyclables must be placed inside the cart and the lid must be completely closed. Materials left beside the cart will not be collected.
Collections will take place at the curb. Do not roll cart into street.
The front of the cart must face the curb (the handle is located on the back side).
Only a city-issued cart may be used for recyclables collection.
Leave a minimum of three feet of space between recycling cart, trash can, yard-waste cart, mailbox, parked cars, etc.
Do not place cart under low utility lines or tree limbs, in front of cars or mailboxes, or under low tree limbs or utility lines.
The cart must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on your collection day and must be removed from the curb by the next day.
Do not write house numbers or place any other markings on the cart. The recycling cart is the property of the City of Winston-Salem.
