Purpose of the Police Reserves

The Winston-Salem Police Departments Reserve Officer program is comprised of dedicated men and women who serve to supplement the full-time sworn workforce of the agency. Reserves carry the same powers as sworn personnel and must meet all state requirements to maintain certification. This includes all state and departmental mandated training and Reserves must meet a minimum monthly service requirement. Reserves volunteer time and service to the agency and are not compensated either monetarily or through agency provided benefits.

Qualifications
 
Minimum Requirements

  1. Reserves must be at least 21 years of age
  2. Reserves must possess or obtain a valid N. C. Drivers license.
  3. Reserve Officers must be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the State of N.C. and be in good standing with the NC Criminal Justice Standards Commission. Non-qualifying experience, such as: corrections officer, probation officer, park ranger, security officer, detention officer, jailer, will not be considered. Additionally Reserves shall ensure that all annual requirements/training is completed to maintain State Certification.
Required Hours for Reserve Officers

  1. Each Reserve Officer shall devote a minimum of 15 hours per month to the Police Reserve. This 15-hour minimum is a requirement of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  2. Each newly-appointed Reserve Officer shall be placed on a one-year probationary period, must successfully complete a Field Training Program, and will be partnered with a full-time sworn officer when providing service to the agency.
