Walkertown Area Plan

PLAN STATUS - Adopted. The City-County Planning Board held a public hearing and recommended adoption of the Walkertown Area Plan in January 2006. The Walkertown Planning Board recommended approval of the Plan in December of 2005, and the Walkertown Town Council adopted the Plan in May 2006. The County Commissioners adopted the Plan in October, 2006. |

The City-County Planning Board staff, along with a Citizens’ Advisory Committee, drafted a Plan to guide future land use and public investment decisions in Walkertown and the surrounding area. The Walkertown Area Plan includes recommendations for land use, transportation, community facilities, historic preservation, the town center and economic development.

Boundaries of the Study Area
The Walkertown Planning Area, as shown on the map to the left, encompasses 11,600 acres, about 40 percent of which is within the town of Walkertown. The Town of Walkertown recently took over from Forsyth County responsibility for planning and zoning within its town limits. The remainder of the planning area is in Forsyth County’s zoning and planning jurisdiction. |
Plan Recommendations
- The creation of Activity Centers (areas for comprehensive commercial, office, and higher-density residential development) at NC 66/US 158, US 158/Old Belews Creek Road, and the Northern Beltway/New Walkertown Road
- Possible locations for a business park
- A new community park, a recreation center, and greenways
- The preservation of historic sites
- Construction of the Northern Beltway and the Walkertown Bypass
- Widening of US 158 and NC 66
- Feasibility studies for several connector roads
- An expansion of the Town Center and the creation of a “Town Square”
