Marketing and Communications - Aug. 26, 2011
To observe the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the city is sponsoring a Community 9 – 11 Commemoration at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in the Joel Coliseum. Parking will be free.
The commemoration will remember those who perished and honor our local first responders. The program will include music by the UNC School of the Arts Orchestra and the Winston-Salem State University Choir, and an Honor Guard representing the Winston-Salem Police and Fire departments, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s and Fire departments, and the Kernersville Police and Fire departments.
The program will also include a poignant video of recollections by local police officers and fire fighters who went to New York to assist with the recovery. The program is schedule to last an hour.
Mayor Allen Joines is encouraging all citizens to attend. “We must never forget the thousands of civilians and servicemen who died in the Sept. 11 attacks, and the bravery of the hundreds of first responders who gave their lives trying to save them,” he said. “Our attendance at this commemoration is a tangible way we can honor those who died and thank those who put their lives at peril every day to protect us.”
