Winston-Salem Receives Tree City USA Growth Award

Vegetation Management - April 22, 2010

Winston-Salem has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for the tenth year running and received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program.

To become a Tree City USA, a community must have a tree board or department; must have a tree-care ordinance; must have a comprehensive community forestry program; and must hold an Arbor Day observance. The Growth Award designation is based on the city’s education efforts for its community forestry tree, its partnerships with other local organizations, and for holding a community-wide tree event.

John Rosenow, the chief executive of the foundation, said the Growth Award honors the “strong commitment” by the city’s elected officials, volunteers and citizens to planting and caring for trees. “They recognize that trees provide numerous environmental, economical and health benefits for the community every day,” he said.
