School's Starting -- Keep Sidewalks Clear

City residents who have sidewalks on their property are being asked to ensure they are safe for school children as school resumes this week in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

Once a sidewalk is built, it is up to property owners or residents to keep them clear of debris and obstacles, says Matthew Burczyk, the city's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator.

"In the interest of keeping children safe as they walk to school or the bus stop, we are reminding property owners to check sidewalks on their property and remove any low-hanging tree limbs or shrubs that obstruct the sidewalk," Burczyk said.

Owners should also sweep sidewalks free of leaves, twigs or other debris that would make footing hazardous, remove any other items that obstruct the sidewalk, and move parked vehicles that block the sidewalk.

City residents should remove curbside carts for garbage or yard waste as soon as possible after they are emptied.

"By working together, we can make our sidewalks safer for school children and more attractive for everyone," Burczyk said.
