20th Street Underpass Closed Pending Summer Repairs

The underpass that carries 20th Street under University Parkway has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians until the bridge over the street can be replaced this summer. A detour has been set up using Cherry, 25th and Thurmond streets.

Officials with the N.C. Department of Transportation “strongly recommended” that the underpass be closed after a piece of the bridge broke off and fell into the underpass, said Stan Polanis, the city transportation director. The state, which is responsible for the bridge, was making emergency repairs today.

Planning is well underway to replace the bridge this summer, Polanis said. Replacing the bridge will necessitate closing University Parkway completely for about two months.
