Outstanding Women Leaders Announced

Visit Winston-Salem and Southern Community Bank honored nine local women during the seventh annual Outstanding Women Leaders Awards program, May 21 at the Brookstown Inn.

The Outstanding Women Leaders Awards was founded by Council Member Vivian H. Burke, the mayor pro tempore for Winston-Salem and chair of the Tourism Development Authority, to recognize those women who have provided outstanding leadership to their community through their civic and professional activities. "Women have carried the torch," Burke said in remarks during the awards presentation. "Our city is blessed to have women who have gone into all kinds of careers, whether it was government, medicine, banking or the hotel/hospitality business."

Recognized this year were:

Evelyn Acree , senior vice president and Piedmont Triad regional executive for Mechanics and Farmers Bank;
Pat Bryan, a longtime executive with Marriott Hotels and past president of the North Carolina Hotel and Motel Association;
Bertha Caldwell, the principal of the Kennedy Learning Center;
Dr. Chere Chase, a neurologist at the Forsyth Medical Center and the first African American woman in the United States to complete a fellowship in neurocritical care;
Miriam Hernandez, the owner of Hispanic Interaction and the founder of Acción Hispana;
Peggy Joines, the human resources director at the Wealth Management Division of Wachovia;
Deronda Kee Lucas, a neighborhood assistance specialist with the city of Winston-Salem;
Sallye Liner, the chief operating officer of Forsyth Medical Center; and
Dr. Esther Powell, the director of student advocacy at Winston-Salem State University.

More information about this year’s recipients will be posted online. In addition, WSTV 13 taped this year’s awards presentation and will replay it through the end of June.
