Antony Farmer Appointed Fire Chief

City Manager Lee D. Garrity today announced the appointment of Antony R. Farmer as Winston-Salem’s next fire chief. Farmer will assume his duties December 1 upon the retirement of current Fire Chief John Gist.

Farmer, a 25-year veteran of the Fire Department, is currently a district fire chief overseeing seven engine companies and two truck companies in the northwest portion of Winston-Salem. Previously he has served as fire fighter, engineer, captain and battalion chief.

"Once again we find that our selection process gives us good candidates and provided us an opportunity to learn a great deal about good people working for the city" Garrity said. "After carefully considering the needs of the department and of the city, I have concluded that Antony is the best candidate to succeed John Gist and lead the department into the future."

Farmer said, "I am excited to have the opportunity to lead our Fire Department. My goal is to provide an efficient, business-like administration while supporting our firemen by providing enhanced training and fair and open leadership."

Farmer, 51, has a bachelor’s degree from Winston-Salem State University and a master’s in Business Administration from Appalachian State University. He holds Fire Academy Level I, II, and III certificates and is a 1999 graduate of the North Carolina Institute of Government. Farmer is married and has three grown children. His salary will be $109,250 annually.
