Winston-Salem has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Foundation in recognition of its commitment to the city’s urban forest. It is the seventh year the city has received this national recognition.
To become a Tree City USA, a community must have: a tree board or department; a tree-care ordinance; a comprehensive community forestry program; and an Arbor Day observance.
John Rosenow, the president of the National Arbor Day Foundation, said the Tree City designation honors the efforts by city officials and citizens to promote and protect trees. "Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperatures and bring nature into our daily lives," Rosenow said.
"A community, and its citizens, that recognize these benefits and provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks."
