Water Conservation Update: Stop Using Sprinklers
Utilities Division - Oct. 23, 2007 Contact: David Saunders, 727-8418
The City/County Utilities Division is requesting that its customers comply with Governor Mike Easley’s directive to cease all irrigation in order to reduce water consumption by 50 percent. Residents, schools and businesses should stop watering lawns and landscaped areas with sprinklers. Customers may still use hand-held watering cans.
Additionally, the Utility Commission has called a special meeting Oct. 29 to consider the next level of conservation to reduce the demand, should it become necessary. The commission will meet at noon in the Public Works conference room on the third floor of City Hall.
In the meantime, Utilities officials urge all customers to follow these additional measures to conserve water:
• Repair leaky faucets and toilets.
• Install reduced-flow showerheads.
• Forego baths and take showers that last no longer than 5 minutes.
• Turn off faucets while shaving, brushing teeth and washing dishes.
• Operate washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads.
• Wash vehicles at commercial car washes that recycle water.
• Refrain from hosing off sidewalks, patios and driveways.
• Refrain from filling swimming and wading pools.
