In the first three weeks of the Feed and Bin and Win promotion, three city residents have each won $100.

Laura Lashley, Dorothy M. Dixon and Jeanette McClain each had their recycling out during the week that their entry card was pulled from the more than 5,000 cards that city residents have mailed in. Lashley said she recycles everything she can, including food scraps that go into her compost pile. "I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t recycle, frankly."

The city’s Recycle Today program and Waste Management Inc. are jointly sponsoring the Feed the Bin and Win contest, which is giving away $100 a week for 16 weeks. The contest started the week of April 16 and runs through Aug.3.

The contest is intended to increase participation in the city’s curbside recycling program. About 700 households have requested green recycling bins since the promotion started, said Terri Masten, the public sector manager for Waste Management in Winston-Salem. "We’re seeing that people are more conscious about how they’re preparing their recyclables," she said.

The contest is open to all single-family households in Winston-Salem that are served by the city’s curbside recycling program. Households enter by sending in an entry card that was mailed to every house in the city. As of May 1, 5,070 households had submitted entries.

A card is drawn at random each week. If that household sets out its recycling that week, the occupants could win $100. Eligible winners must have recycled properly by placing only acceptable recyclable materials in their bin. If the $100 is not won, the prize rolls over to the next week, giving the next household a chance to win $200.

The entry form, contest rules and recycling guidelines are also available online at www.cityofws.org/recycling.
