Festival, Forums Highlight Race Equality Week

The annual Hispanic festival and two forums exploring race and community relations will be held this month in celebration of Race Equality Week, Sept. 24 - 29.
On Tuesday, Sept. 25, Mayor Allen Joines will welcome participants to a student forum on race relations to be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Carver High School. Students from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high schools will discuss their perspectives on the state of race relations.
On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Human Relations Commission will sponsor the sixth in the "Beyond Soul and Salsa" series of forums on African-American/Hispanic issues. The forum will discuss the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding race-based schools and the latest immigration legislation developments, both locally and nationwide. The forum will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, 1200 N. Trade Street.
Fiesta 2007, celebrating diversity, Hispanic/Latino heritage and cross-cultural understanding among all people, will be held noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, along Fourth and Spruce streets in downtown Winston-Salem. There will be food, music, dancing, arts and crafts and children’s activities. Fiesta 2007 is sponsored by the Hispanic League of the Piedmont Triad and co-sponsored by the city of Winston- Salem and other local agencies.
