Silas Creek Parkway Repair Update
Utilities officials estimate that the broken water main that closed Silas Creek Parkway will be repaired about noon today. However, the entire width of Silas Creek Parkway at the site of the break will have to be replaced because of extensive water damage.
Utilities workers worked through the night to excavate the site where a 16-inch water main ruptured Tuesday afternoon. The rupture undermined the road bed before breaking through the asphalt paving about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Utilities Division is coordinating its repairs with the state Department of Transportation, which will repair the road.
Noel Chilton, the assistant county engineer for the N.C. Department of Transportation, said that about 300 feet of all six lanes will have to be replaced, including the gravel road bed. If no further damage is discovered, he estimates that the road could be partially reopened by Friday afternoon.
Detours have been set up, but drivers should take a route that avoids the area if possible.
