Public Information Meeting on West End Utilities Work
Utilities Division - Dec. 11, 2006
Contact: Toneq’ McCullough, 747-7309
Representatives from the City/County Utilities Division will hold a drop-in information meeting Tuesday, Dec. 12, to explain plans to replace water lines and repair sewer lines in most of the West End neighborhood over the next 18 months.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Central Library main auditorium, 660 West 5th St.
The project will replace aging infrastructure in the West End, some of which is up to 100 years old. A completely new water distribution system will be installed, including pipes, fire hydrants, valves and water meters. The existing system will remain in service until the new system is completed and ready to be placed in service.
The sewer system will be rehabilitated using several trenchless or semi-trenchless methods that repair or replace the existing pipes with little or no digging.
Construction will begin in early 2007 and will continue until about July 2008. Work will be confined to several blocks at a time and will generally occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Work on any given street should require one to two weeks. During this time the street will be closed to vehicles, however, residents will have access to their homes.
The work area includes most streets in the West End between Broad Street and Hawthorne Road, north of First and Fourth Streets.
