Events

Great American Cleanup in Winston-Salem

  • 9:00 to 12:00

Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful needs volunteers to help cleanup streets, parks, streams and schools across the city. All supplies, lunch and drinks are provided. Last year nearly 723 volunteers removed over 14,000 lbs. of trash and debris. Individuals and groups can request an area to clean or can be assigned to a location.

Big Sweep

Conducted nationally on the 1st Saturday in October to clean up up local waterways. Volunteers are needed to clean streams and lakes here in Winston-Salem.

Planting trees

Community Roots Day

Annual tree planting project is held in early fall, at a different location in the city each year. KWSB coordinates this project with the WS/FC Community Appearance Commission and the Vegetation Management Division of the city.

 Volunteers are needed for this effort. T-shirts, hats, food and drinks are provided.

Flower Bulb Blitz
Thousands of flower bulbs will be planted in public areas, such as along the greenways and parks, throughout the city. Volunteers are needed, no green thumb required!

Programs

Adopt-A-Flower Bed
A program coordinated with the Vegetation Management Division, in which groups are asked to “adopt” city right of way beds and maintain them by weeding, planting, collecting litter, etc. All supplies will be provided and signs erected with the group’s name. volunteers cleaning out a stream

Adopt-A-Stream
A program jointly coordinated with the Stormwater Division of the city.  Groups are asked to “adopt” sections of local waterways and clean them twice a year. Supplies will be provided and signs erected with the group’s name.

Adopt-A-Street
Groups “adopt” a stretch of a city street by cleaning it up every 2 months. KWSB provides supplies, trash pickup, and an “Adopt-A-Street” sign with the group’s or individual's name. Currently there are over 60 groups with adopted streets.

Adopt-A-Park
Groups "adopt" a park by cleaning it up every 3 months.KWSB provides supplies, trash pickup , and an " Adopt-A Park" sign with the group's or individual's name.

Clean & Green
Conducted each year during Earth week in April. Representatives from KWSB and the Garden Club Council judge public schools on beautification and environmental education programs. Flags, certificates, plaques, and trees are awarded.  Winners for this year will be announced at the June school board meeting.

Flower Bed Program
Every spring KWSB partners with the Garden Club Council of Winston-Salem and the Vegetation Management Division of the city to provide free annual plants to neighborhood associations and other groups to plant in right of way beds usually at entrances to their neighborhoods. KWSB, the city, and the Garden Club Council judge these beds during the summer and provide awards.

Presentations
KWSB conducts presentations on litter prevention, recycling and other environmental issues throughout the year in the schools and for other organizations as requested.
