Little Creek Greenway

The first phase of this project provides for the construction of a greenway from the Shoppes at Little Creek on Hanes Mall Boulevard along the east side of Little Creek to the vicinity of Atwood Road. The project also includes a bridge connection to Little Creek Park to the west. Future phases will extend the greenway all of the way to Somerset Drive.

Public Hearing to Obtain Public Comment on Potential Impact to
Little Creek Park Related to the Construction of Little Creek Greenway

The city has plans to construct a new greenway from the Shoppes at Little Creek on Hanes Mall Boulevard along the east side of Little Creek to the vicinity of Atwood Road and providing a connection to Little Creek Park. The project is approximately 4,800 feet in length.

There is a provision in Federal law that a public hearing be held for construction projects that are on public park property to determine if there will be any adverse impact to the park as a result of construction. Since the new greenway will connect to Little Creek Park, the city’s Recreation and Parks Commission will hold a public hearing at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at the Rupert Bell Neighborhood Recreation Center to obtain public comment on any potential impact to the park.

The city anticipates that the construction will have a minimal impact to the park and will not adversely affect the activities, features, or attributes of the property. It is anticipated that the greenway will enhance recreational opportunities for the public and improve pedestrian and bicyclists access to the park.

The city’s Greenway Plan provides a blueprint for creating a multimodal transportation network to connect neighborhoods to nearby parks, shopping, schools, and other neighborhoods. Greenways not only serve to improve transportation access to pedestrians and bicyclists, but these open space corridors also provide places for conservation and recreation.
